Chapter 12 - THE ALLIANCE OF THE DAMNEDBack in Charlotte, the shockwaves of the Prescott empire's collapse had left a massive power vacuum in commercial real estate and local politics. Into that vacuum stepped Senator Miller—the very politician who had tried to bribe me with a fast-tracked promotion during the early hours of Emily's rescue.

Senator Miller sat in his mahogany-paneled study, sweating profusely as he watched a news report on CNN detailing the expansion of the Hart-Protective Act.

His chief of staff, a nervous young man named David, paced frantically across the Persian rug. "Senator, we have a major problem. The federal grand jury is expanding its investigation into political campaign contributions. They’ve subpoenaed all records from Prescott Holdings, and your name is on the top of the ledger for the 2024 election cycle."

Senator Miller slammed his whiskey glass down, shattering it against the desk. "Get on the phone with the Department of Justice liaison! Find out if we can cut a deal before they indict us!"

"It’s too late, sir," David whispered, staring at his tablet screen. "Federal agents are downstairs right now. They have a warrant signed by Judge Holloway."

The heavy oak doors of the study flew open. Two federal marshals, flanked by military police investigators acting under joint federal-defense jurisdiction, marched into the room.

"Senator Miller," the lead marshal stated coldly, pulling out a pair of steel cuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, campaign finance fraud, and accepting bribes from a designated criminal enterprise. Put your hands behind your back."

As the cuffs clicked into place, Senator Miller caught his reflection in the dark window pane, realizing too late that challenging a U.S. Army General who fought for family was a fatal political mistake.
