Chapter 19 - THE UNBROKEN THREADA year after that fateful evening at Mercy General Hospital, Emily and I gathered on our back porch as the North Carolina sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange, gold, and purple.

Emily held a cup of chamomile tea, her eyes shining with peace and renewed purpose.
"Mom," Emily whispered softly, leaning her head against my shoulder. "Do you remember how terrified I was that night in the hospital?"
I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her close. "I remember every second, sweetheart."
"I thought my life was over," she continued, smiling as she looked out over the treeline. "I thought money and power could bury the truth forever. But I was wrong. Because my mother was a soldier."
