Chapter 4 - THE WEB UNRAVELSThe arrests of Margaret, Ethan, and Brandon Prescott sent a shockwave through the upper echelons of North Carolina society that hadn't been felt since the collapse of the state's largest banking scandal a decade prior. Overnight, lifelong friends, sycophantic politicians, and high-priced corporate lawyers who had dined at the Prescott mansion vanished like ghosts at sunrise. Nobody wanted to be associated with a sinking ship loaded with federal felony charges.

I spent the afternoon at the secure federal medical facility at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, sitting beside Emily.
My daughter was finally resting peacefully. The physical bruises on her face and arms were still stark purple and green, but the hollow, terrified look in her eyes had begun to recede, replaced by the warmth of knowing she was protected by someone who would burn the world down before letting her come to harm.
"Mom," Emily whispered softly, her hand reaching out from beneath the blanket to touch my sleeve. "Are they... are they really not going to hurt us anymore?"
I took her fragile hand in mine, kissing her knuckles gently. "Listen to me, Emily. Look at me."
She blinked her good eye open, looking up at me.
"Not only will they never touch you again," I promised, my voice steady and resolute, "but every single asset, every corrupt judge, and every penny they used to threaten you is going to be seized by the federal government. They are finished. Their empire is gone."
Emily let out a long, shuddering breath, a tear slipping down her cheek—not of fear, but of profound, overwhelming relief. For the first year since she married Ethan, she finally looked like she could breathe.
Later that evening, back at my tactical command suite, my secure terminal beeped with an encrypted incoming transmission from the Pentagon.
It was General Thomas Vance, commander of Forces Command.
I stood up straight and pressed the accept button, snapping a crisp salute toward the camera lens.
"Colonel Hart," General Vance said, his expression a mix of stern official gravity and subtle amusement. "I’ve been reading the SITREPS coming out of Charlotte. Sounds like you’ve been keeping busy outside of regular garrison duties."
"Sir, I was handling a domestic security threat involving immediate danger to an American citizen and military family member," I reported smoothly.
"A domestic security threat involving three federal indictments, an EPA scandal, and half the local judiciary stepping down in disgrace?" General Vance let out a low whistle, leaning back in his leather chair. "Victoria, you always did know how to clear a minefield with a sledgehammer rather than a toothpick."
"When the enemy forces an engagement, Sir, you don't negotiate. You overwhelm."
"Well, Headquarters has reviewed the operational fallout," General Vance continued, his tone turning serious. "The Department of Justice has formally commended your decisive action. Furthermore, the Secretary of the Army has taken note of your leadership under extreme personal duress. Effective next month, your promotion packet to Brigadier General has been expedited and unanimously approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee."
I blinked, momentarily taken aback. "Sir... my promotion?"
May you like
"You protected your family while upholding the honor of the uniform, Victoria," General Vance said with a rare, proud smile. "Congratulations, General Hart. But before you pin on that star, you’ve got a court date in Charlotte next week. The Prescotts are trying to post bail. I trust you have a tactical plan for that?"
A cold, satisfied smile touched my lips. "Sir, their bail request is about to run straight into a brick wall named federal custody."
