Chapter 2 - THE UNTOUCHABLE EMPIRE CRACKSBy 0400 hours, the illusion of the Prescott family’s untouchable immunity was shredding faster than cheap paper in a hurricane.

I hadn't taken Emily back to my quarters at Fort Liberty. Instead, under armed escort by two Military Police investigators who had arrived at the hospital within twenty minutes of my call, Emily was moved to a secure federal medical facility at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. She was safe. Medical kits, forensic nurses, and psychological trauma specialists were already documenting every single bruise, torn thread, and fingerprint left by Ethan and his thugs.

Meanwhile, I sat in the command center of my temporary tactical outpost—a rented conference room at a hotel overlooking downtown Charlotte—with a massive digital display board glowing against the dark windows.

My phone buzzed. It was Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance, my executive officer and cybersecurity chief.

"Colonel, you’re not going to believe what we pulled from the Prescott Estate's private cloud servers before their IT guys realized they were locked out of their own routers," Vance said, his voice crackling with suppressed excitement.

"Talk to me, Marcus," I ordered, sipping black coffee.

"We didn't just find footage of Emily being locked in the guest house," Vance reported. "We found financial ledgers. Off-the-books accounts, shell corporations in the Cayman Islands, massive campaign kickbacks funneled to three local superior court judges, and—get this—environmental dumping records from Prescott Industrial Manufacturing that violate federal EPA laws to the tune of fifty million dollars."

I raised an eyebrow. "They weren't just domestic abusers. They were professional criminals operating a corporate syndicate under the guise of high society."

"It gets better, Ma'ch. Ethan Prescott’s older brother, Brandon, the one who smirked at you in the hospital? He’s the primary beneficiary of a massive insurance fraud scheme involving three burned-down commercial properties last year. The local police chief buried the reports because his department's pension fund is directly managed by Prescott Holdings."

"A complete ecosystem of corruption," I murmured. "They thought they were untouchable because they owned every watchdog in the county. But they forgot one fundamental rule of engagement."

"What's that, Colonel?"

"They never checked if the federal government was watching."

At 0800 hours, the first shockwave hit Wall Street and local media simultaneously.

I had authorized Vance to release a heavily redacted package of the domestic abuse evidence, combined with the federal warrant filings, straight to independent investigative journalists and the Department of Justice's civil rights division. By breakfast time, CNN, Fox News, and every local news station in North Carolina were broadcasting breaking headlines:

“PROMINENT CHARLOTTE DYNASTY PRESCOTT FAMILY FACING FEDERAL INVESTIGATION; U.S. ARMY COLONEL LEADS CHARGE AFTER DAUGHTER’S ASSAULT.”

My phone started ringing off the hook. Local politicians, business associates of the Prescotts, and even the Mayor’s office tried calling. I let every single call go to voicemail.

Then came a text message from an unknown number.

“Colonel Hart. This is Senator Miller. Let’s talk. Name your price. Drop the federal filings, and we can make sure your military pension is fast-tracked to Brigadier General, no questions asked.”

I stared at the screen, a cold smile touching my lips. They still thought everything had a price tag. They still thought human dignity and a daughter's safety were commodities subject to negotiation.

I typed back a single word:

May you like

“Unconditional.”

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of my hotel command suite burst open. Standing there, panting and disheveled without his usual arrogant composure, was Ethan Prescott himself. Behind him stood two federal marshals with handcuffs gleaming in the morning light.
