Chapter 16 - THE VERDICT DELIVEREDAfter three grueling weeks of damning testimony, forensic financial audits, audio recordings, and emotional survivor testimonies, the jury returned with its verdict.

Judge Holloway sat stone-faced as the jury foreman stood up, holding a thick stack of manila verdict sheets.

"On the count of racketeering and organized crime syndicate operation, how do you find the defendant, Margaret Prescott?"

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreman read clearly.

"On the count of interstate kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment of Emily Hart, how do you find the defendants, Ethan Prescott and Brandon Prescott?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

A collective gasp swept through the courtroom gallery. Ethan slumped forward, burying his face in his hands as quiet sobs escaped his lips. Brandon stared blankly ahead, his spirit entirely crushed.

Judge Holloway slammed his gavel down with a sharp, resounding crack that echoed through the room.

"In light of the overwhelming evidence and the severity of these heinous crimes, I sentence Margaret Prescott to forty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Ethan and Brandon Prescott are each sentenced to thirty years. Court is adjourned."

As the federal marshals moved in to place the handcuffs on the Prescott family for the final time, the chapter of terror they had written over Charlotte was closed forever.
