Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence
The hospital room smelled sharply of bleach and antiseptic, a stark contrast to the suffocating scent of the white roses scattered across the linoleum floor. Flynn remained frozen beside the bed, his broad shoulders slumped, the formidable CEO of Vance Global reduced to a hollow, trembling shell.
"Mabel, please," he choked out, his fingers hovering inches from my blanket before retreating as if burned. "Just tell me what we can do. I'll fix this. I'll tear down Selina's life, I swear to God—"
"You already tore ours down," I whispered, my voice raspy from the breathing tube.
Dr. Marcus Reed adjusted his glasses, stepping back into his professional barrier between us. "Mr. Vance, your wife’s physical recovery is touch-and-go, but the emotional trauma of losing two unborn children while experiencing near-fatal trauma is irreversible. I must ask you to leave. She needs rest, not your belated remorse."
Flynn looked like he had been struck across the face. He turned his bloodshot eyes toward me, desperate for a shred of mercy. When he found only stone-cold indifference, a ragged sob broke from his chest. He backed out of the room slowly, his tailored suit looking ridiculous against the bleak hospital backdrop.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Dr. Reed leaned in closer. "My legal team has already secured the medical examiner's preservation reports regarding the lost pregnancy, Mrs. Vance. The district attorney's office has been notified of an attempted double homicide of an unborn lineage. When you are ready, you hold all the cards."
I stared up at the IV drip, watching the clear liquid slide down the plastic tube drop by drop.
