Chapter 13 - The Shadow of Selina

While Flynn withered away in federal prison, Selina Cole was playing a very different game behind the high-security razor wire of Stateville.

My private investigator, a former federal agent named Marcus Vance (no relation, thankfully), called me late on a rainy Tuesday evening with an urgent update.

"Mabel, you need to tighten your security detail," Marcus said, his voice grave over the secure line.

"What happened, Marcus?" I asked, setting my pen down.

"Selina has been trading information with federal prosecutors regarding an older, un-indicted conspiracy involving corporate espionage against competing pharmaceutical firms a decade ago. In exchange for a sentence reduction, she’s trying to pin the core leadership of those shell companies onto you."

I let out a cold, humorless laugh. "On me? I wasn't even in private equity ten years ago; I was still finishing my master's degree at Wharton."

"It doesn't matter," Marcus warned. "Desperate people throw whatever mud they can find hoping something sticks. Her lawyer filed an emergency motion alleging that you were aware of Flynn’s corporate embezzlement all along and actively benefited from it."

"Let her file," I replied calmly, a dangerous spark igniting in my chest. "If Selina wants to drag this back into a courtroom, I will make sure the judge unseals every medical record, every forged prescription, and every psychiatric evaluation from her past. Let's see how long her plea deal holds up when the full scope of her sociopathy is laid bare under oath."
