Chapter 18 - The Unbroken Horizon

The gala wrapped up around midnight, and Arthur dropped me off at the secure private entrance of my penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan.
The apartment was quiet, bathed in the soft, ambient glow of the city lights reflecting off the dark water. I kicked off my high heels, letting out a long, satisfying sigh as I tossed my evening clutch onto the entryway table.
As I walked toward the kitchen to pour a glass of sparkling water, my phone buzzed on the counter.
It wasn't an email. It was a calendar notification.
Tomorrow, 10:00 AM: Keynote Speaker at the National Women in Private Equity Summit.
I smiled. Two years ago, I was trapped in a golden cage, gasping for air on a blood-stained rug while a man I loved tried to take my life. Today, I was the keynote speaker for an organization dedicated to empowering thousands of women to take control of their own financial and personal destinies.
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, pressing my palm gently against the cool glass.
