Six months later, the final decree of my divorce was signed and sealed by the superior court.
Vance Global had been restructured under a new board of directors, with my private equity firm holding the controlling voting share. The company was officially rebranded, erasing the Vance name from the Chicago skyline entirely.
I stood on the private balcony of my new penthouse suite, watching the golden autumn sun rise over Lake Michigan.
The scars across my abdomen were still visible—faint, silver lines etched into my skin like a permanent map of survival. But the pain that had once threatened to consume me had transformed into something entirely different.
Strength.
Arthur stepped onto the balcony, holding two crystal flutes filled with sparkling cider. He handed one to me with a warm, knowing smile.
"To new beginnings, Mabel," he toasted softly.
"To new beginnings," I replied, clinking my glass against his.
