Chapter 14 - The Courtroom Showdown, Round Two

The emergency evidentiary hearing was scheduled for a bleak Thursday morning.

The courtroom was sparsely populated compared to the circus of the original criminal trial, but the tension was palpable. Selina was escorted in by two armed corrections officers. She looked gaunt, her skin pale, the designer clothes replaced by a faded yellow prison jumpsuit. When she saw me sitting at the plaintiff’s table in a tailored cream pantsuit, looking radiant and completely unshaken, her eyes narrowed into venomous slits.

Her defense attorney stood up, adjusting his glasses. "Your Honor, we move to subpoena Mrs. Mabel Vance’s personal and corporate bank records from the past decade, arguing complicity in Vance Global’s historical financial irregularities."

The judge looked skeptically over his reading glasses. "On what grounds, counsel? These allegations were thoroughly investigated and dismissed during the original forensic audit."

Before Selina’s lawyer could stammer out a response, I stood up smoothly, buttoning my jacket, and caught the judge's eye.

"Your Honor, if I may approach the bench?" I requested.

The judge nodded. "Proceed, Mrs. Vance."

I walked forward, handing a sealed manila folder directly to the bailiff to pass up. "In the interest of judicial economy and exposing bad faith litigation, Phoenix Capital is submitting a supplementary dossier. It contains certified affidavits from three compounding pharmacists in downtown Chicago who were paid off by Selina Cole to tamper with my prenatal vitamins, alongside unredacted transcripts of prison yard recordings where Ms. Cole explicitly brags about framing my former husband."

Selina’s head snapped toward me, her face draining of all color. "You... you don't have those..."

"I have everything, Selina," I said, turning my head slowly to look down at her with absolute, unyielding coldness. "You spent your whole life pulling strings like a puppet master. You never realized that once the strings snap, the puppet is just scrap metal."

The judge flipped open the folder, scanned the first two pages, and let out a heavy, disgusted sigh. He banged his gavel with a force that rattled the microphones.

"Motion denied," the judge snapped. "Furthermore, the court finds this filing to be a frivolous abuse of legal process. Ms. Cole, your pending sentence reduction motion is hereby revoked with prejudice. Take her away."
