Chapter 19 - The Legacy of the Phoenix

The morning sun rose over Chicago in a brilliant explosion of gold and amber, burning away the lingering morning mist over Lake Michigan.

I stood backstage at the McCormick Place convention center, adjusting the collar of my charcoal-gray blazer. Behind the heavy velvet curtains, the low murmur of over two thousand attendees filled the auditorium—a sea of ambitious, brilliant, resilient women waiting for the opening keynote.

My events coordinator, a sharp young woman named Chloe whom I had personally mentored through Phoenix Capital, gave me an encouraging thumbs-up.

"You're up in two minutes, Mabel," Chloe whispered. "The room is packed to capacity. Every major media outlet is livestreaming."

"Thank you, Chloe," I said, taking one final, deep breath.

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, letting my hand rest lightly against my lower abdomen. The silver scars were still there beneath the fabric—silent reminders of a war I never asked to fight, and a survival I had earned with every drop of my own blood.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the booming voice of the Master of Ceremonies echoed through the hall speakers. "Please put your hands together for the founder and CEO of Phoenix Capital, Mrs. Mabel Vance!"

Deafening applause erupted through the auditorium, a wall of sound that shook the floorboards beneath my feet.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't look back.

I pulled back the velvet curtain, stepped out into the brilliant warmth of the stage lights, and walked straight toward the microphone, ready to tell the world how an empire built on lies had burned to ash—and how out of those very ashes, a new queen had risen.
