Chapter 15 - Rebuilding from the Roots

By winter, Chicago had plunged into a deep, freezing freeze, but inside the headquarters of Phoenix Capital, the atmosphere was vibrant and warm.
The fund had successfully backed twelve women-led startups in its first six months, injecting millions of dollars of reclaimed corporate assets into businesses founded by survivors of domestic trauma, economic abuse, and systemic discrimination.

Arthur walked up beside me, handing me a steaming cup of green tea.
"You know, Mabel," Arthur murmured, watching the presentation with a proud smile, "if someone had told me three years ago that we'd be dismantling a Fortune 500 company and turning its ill-gotten gains into a philanthropic powerhouse, I would have told them they were insane."
"Sometimes it takes a total demolition to realize what the land was always meant for," I replied softly, taking a sip of the warm tea.
"Are you going to the annual charity gala this weekend?" Arthur asked casually. "Half the city’s corporate elite will be there. It’s the first major social event since the Vance trial concluded."

I looked down at my hands, resting against the polished conference table. The silver scars across my lower abdomen still twitched faintly when the weather turned cold, but they no longer felt like wounds. They felt like armor.
"Of course I'm going," I said, a confident smile touching my lips. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
