Chapter 7 - The Unraveling Alliance
During the afternoon recess, my attorney handed me a encrypted flash drive in a private consultation room.
"What is this, Arthur?" I asked, examining the sleek black device.
"An intercepted audio log from the holding cells," Arthur replied with a faint, grim smile. "Our private investigators managed to plant a directional mic near the holding corridor. Flynn and Selina were placed in adjacent temporary holding bays during the recess. They didn't know the acoustic baffle was wide open."
I plugged the drive into my laptop. The audio file loaded immediately.
At first, there was only static and the sound of distant footsteps. Then, Flynn’s voice cut through the speakers, dripping with venom.
“You lied to me, Selina. You told me she attacked you. You made me believe she was going to kill you.”
Selina’s voice answered back, sharp and mocking: “And you believed every word, Flynn! You were always so desperate to play the hero for me, just like when we were seventeen. You stabbed her without blinking an eye. Don't act like a victim now—you enjoyed the feeling of righteous anger.”
“I lost my children because of you!” Flynn roared, the sound of fists slamming against a steel bench echoing through the audio. “I killed my own flesh and blood!”
“Your children?” Selina laughed hysterically. “You never wanted children with her! You told me on our anniversary last year that she was just a convenient incubator for your corporate image!”
The audio cut off with a sharp screech of feedback.
I looked up at Arthur, my chest tightening. I had suspected Flynn’s emotional detachment, but hearing him admit those words out loud stripped away the last lingering thread of grief.

"Do you want to submit this into the public record for the custody and divorce proceedings?" Arthur asked gently.
"Submit it?" I replied, a cold, hard smile touching my lips. "Play it during the opening statements of the criminal trial. Let the entire city of Chicago hear the kind of man Flynn Vance really is."
