Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT ARREST AND THE FIRST CRACK

By nine o'clock that evening, the guests had all departed, leaving the sprawling garden estate eerily quiet. The elegant white tables and fairy lights stood like ghostly reminders of a birthday party gone disastrously wrong. Inside the master suite, I sat at my vanity, removing my earrings while Leo slept soundly in the adjoining nursery, exhausted from the emotional roller coaster of the day.
My phone buzzed violently on the marble countertop. It was a direct alert from the estate's perimeter security system.
I tapped the screen and opened the live camera feed covering the guest house at the back of the property. The door was unlocked, and a shadowy figure was frantically tossing cushions off the sofa and tearing open drawers. It was Marco.
He must have slipped back onto the property through a gap in the rear hedge line while the security guards were distracted clearing the catering trucks. He was desperate. He knew his passport and his emergency stash of cash—siphoned from our joint savings account over the past six months—were hidden inside a hollowed-out book in the guest house library.
I didn't call the guards immediately. Instead, I stood up, walked to my walk-in safe, and retrieved a small, legal document: a temporary restraining order and an emergency asset freeze signed by a midnight-duty magistrate judge whom Richard had managed to rouse from bed within record time.
Striding down the moonlit pathway toward the guest house, my heels clicked sharply against the stone pavers. I pushed the heavy oak door wide open. The interior lights glared harshly.
Marco spun around, clutching a stack of cash and his passport in a sweating grip. His tailored suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wild with panic.
"Andrea!" he gasped, stumbling forward. "Thank god. Look, let's just calm down. We can talk about this. Don't ruin our family over a stupid mistake. Valerie manipulated me! She promised me an easy life, but I love you and Leo—"
"Save it, Marco," I interrupted, my voice cutting through the humid night air like a scalpel. "The act is over. The curtain dropped five hours ago in front of fifty witnesses, including my corporate board members."
Marco’s face twisted, the mask of remorse instantly vanishing, replaced by the bitter, venomous sneer I had never seen during our five years of marriage.
"You cold-hearted bitch!" Marco snarled, taking a threatening step toward me. "You think you're untouchable just because you inherited a knack for selling shiny rocks? Without me, you're nothing! You would have died alone in this empty house if I hadn't agreed to play house with you!"
"And yet," I replied smoothly, holding up my phone to display the live police GPS tracker, "you're the one standing in a guest house you no longer own, holding stolen property while a police cruiser turns into our driveway right now."
As if on cue, the flashing red and blue lights of two squad cars illuminated the windows of the guest house, casting eerie, dancing shadows across Marco’s horrified face. Heavy boots thudded up the wooden steps, and two uniform officers pushed the door open, their hands resting on their utility belts.
"Marco Vance?" the lead officer barked, flashing a badge. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, criminal conspiracy, and violation of a domestic restraining order. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Marco lunged forward in a desperate attempt to shove past the officers, but they intercepted him effortlessly, slamming him face-first against the mahogany bookshelf. As the cold steel cuffs snapped onto his wrists, he screamed over his shoulder, his voice cracking with hysterical rage:

"You won't win, Andrea! Valerie has people you don't even know about! You’ll pay for this!"
As they dragged him out into the night, I didn't feel a shred of pity. I only felt the cold, crisp clarity of a woman who had just excised a cancer from her life.
