Chapter 5 - THE HUNT FOR THE PUPPETMASTER

The revelation that Jonathan Vance was pulling the strings changed everything. If Jonathan was backing Marco legally and financially, it meant there were dormant accounts, hidden shell corporations, and legal documents waiting to be uncovered before they could launch a secondary counter-suit against my company.

That evening, Richard and I sat in my home office surrounded by stacks of financial records, bank statements, and corporate ledgers. Leo was tucked safely into bed upstairs, guarded by two trusted private security guards stationed outside his bedroom door.

"If Jonathan is funding them," Richard said, tapping a pen against a complex web of corporate ownership charts, "he must be moving capital through a front company. Look at this subsidiary registered in the British Virgin Islands: Vance Global Holdings. It received a three-million-dollar injection three days before Leo’s birthday party."

"Three million dollars," I muttered, staring at the glowing monitor. "That’s more than enough to bribe a corrupt judge or hire a high-priced legal team to drag out a custody battle for years."

Suddenly, the computer screen flickered. The secure corporate network firewall alarm blared softly—a gentle yellow flash in the corner of the display.

"What is that?" Richard leaned in closer. "Someone is pinging our internal server from an external IP address."

I quickly pulled up the intrusion detection dashboard. The incoming data packet wasn't a standard hacking attempt; it was an encrypted digital transmission containing a single video file, tagged with an anonymous sender ID.

Without hesitation, I clicked play.

The video opened to a dimly lit warehouse filled with wooden shipping crates. The camera was handheld, shaking slightly, but the audio was crystal clear. Jonathan Vance was pacing back and forth across the concrete floor, arguing angrily with a burly man wearing a motorcycle jacket.

"I don't care how incompetent Marco is!" Jonathan roared, his face red with fury in the grainy footage. "He screwed up the public reveal! Now Andrea has all the leverage, and the police have Valerie locked up tight! If she digs any deeper into the Cayman accounts, she’ll find the paper trail leading straight back to my offshore holdings!"

The man in the motorcycle jacket crossed his arms. "Relax, Mr. Vance. Your nephew might be a fool, but we still have the ace up our sleeve. We have the forged adoption papers from five years ago—the ones we bribed the crooked clinic administrator to sign when Leo was born. If we file them through a proxy before Andrea’s corporate team freezes your assets, the court will have to mandate a DNA injunction."

Jonathan sneered. "Do it. File them tonight. I want Andrea broken, penniless, and crawling on her knees before the end of the month."

The video cut to black.

Richard sat back in his chair, his jaw slack. "Good lord... forged adoption papers? They’re planning to weaponize the family court system with fabricated documents to contest Leo's biological parentage."

"Not if we get to them first," I said, grabbing my smartphone and dialing a direct, emergency contact number. "Detective Miller? It’s Andrea Vance. I have the location, the identities, and the audio confession of the man financing the entire operation. Get a tactical team down to the old shipping yards on Pier 42 immediately."
