Chapter 3 - THE ACCOMPLICE IN RED

While Marco spent the night in a concrete holding cell awaiting his morning arraignment, Valerie was frantically trying to cover her own tracks across town.

According to the intelligence report Richard’s private investigator compiled by 3:00 AM, Valerie hadn't gone home after being escorted off my property. Instead, she had checked into a high-end downtown boutique hotel using a burner credit card—one linked directly to the corporate account she had been slowly draining before I caught her red-handed a month ago.

At 7:00 AM, just as the morning sun began to pierce through the heavy smog of the financial district, I stood outside the glass double doors of Valerie’s hotel room, flanked by two private security contractors and Detective Miller of the city's financial crimes unit.

"Are you certain she's still inside, Andrea?" Detective Miller asked, adjusting his trench coat.

"Look at her digital footprint," I said, handing him my tablet. "She just ordered room service thirty minutes ago, and her phone's IP address hasn't moved from the penthouse suite since midnight. She thinks she's safe because Marco took the fall at the estate last night."

Detective Miller nodded sharply. He signaled the hotel security manager to use the master electronic override key. The heavy door clicked open, and we swarmed the suite in a synchronized sweep.

Valerie was sitting at a glass writing desk wrapped in a silk bathrobe, frantically typing on a laptop with one hand while clutching a glass of champagne in the other. Her dramatic makeup from the birthday party was smeared beneath her eyes, giving her a desperate, haunted appearance.

"Freeze! Police!" Detective Miller shouted, slamming his hand down on the desk and snapping the laptop shut.

Valerie let out a piercing shriek, dropping her champagne flute. The crystal shattered against the hardwood floor, sending golden liquid spraying across the Persian rug.

"You can't arrest me!" Valerie screeched, scrambling backward out of her chair. "I didn't steal anything! Marco planned the whole thing! He told me Andrea was a tyrant who abused him! I was just a victim of domestic manipulation!"

"That's a fascinating narrative, Valerie," I stepped forward from the shadows of the doorway, my arms crossed over my tailored blazer. "Especially considering that my forensic accountant found forty-two separate wire transfers moving company funds from my jewelry inventory accounts directly into your offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands."

Valerie’s face turned the color of ash. Her lower lip trembled, and all the arrogant defiance she had displayed in my garden evaporated into thin air.

"And let's not forget," I continued, walking slowly toward her until I stood towering over her chair, "the hidden camera footage from my office. The one where you laughed about fencing my custom platinum necklaces to buy yourself a designer wardrobe."

Detective Miller slapped a pair of heavy handcuffs onto her wrists with a crisp, metallic snap. "Valerie Vance—or whatever your real maiden name is—you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As they hauled her out through the opulent hotel lobby in her silk bathrobe, hiding her face behind her long, unwashed hair, I realized the first phase of my battle was won. But the true war—the battle to dismantle the hidden network that had empowered them both—was only just beginning.
