Six hundred people—investors, philanthropists, board members, and society columnists—held their collective breath. They had come to celebrate the annual Founders’ Gala for Hayes Dynamics, anticipating a pleasant evening of quiet networking and charitable donations. Chapter 21 - The Shadows of the Old Guard

The private jet sliced through the stratosphere, its interior bathed in the soft, ambient glow of recessed LED lighting. While the rest of the cabin slept or reviewed international market projections, Victoria Whitmore sat by the window, watching the curvature of the earth catch the first pale streaks of dawn.

Marcus quietly placed a heavy, dark-red leather binder on the table before her. It bore no corporate logo, only a wax seal stamped with the insignia of the European banking syndicate in Zurich.

"What is this?" Victoria asked, not looking up from her tablet.

"That," Marcus said grimly, "is the ghost of your grandfather’s past. Or rather, a collection of debt notes and dormant proxy shares that your late grandfather acquired back in the late nineties during the European currency crisis. Someone in Zurich has been quietly buying up the secondary fractions on the dark market."

Victoria finally lowered her tablet, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the wax seal. "Who?"

"Lord Reginald Vance-Sterling," Marcus replied. "A distant, exiled branch of the family. He was stripped of his voting rights thirty years ago for attempting to sell proprietary shipping routes to a state-backed competitor in Asia. Word has it he’s looking to make a comeback by launching a hostile proxy challenge against our European infrastructure assets while you're in the middle of the green-energy rollout."

A cold, precise smile touched the corners of Victoria’s mouth. "Reginald thinks that because I spent the last year cleaning up domestic mess in Silicon Valley, I’ve left my international flanks exposed. He’s about to find out why grandfather always said a cornered wolf is nothing compared to a patient heir."
