The last syllable of Khloe’s toast hung in the air, tasting of sour champagne and reckless vanity. Six hundred people—investors, philanthropists, board members, and society columnists—held their collective breath. They had come to celebrate the annual Founders’ Gala for Hayes Dynamics, anticipating a pleasant evening of quiet networking and charitable donations. Chapter 6 - The UnravelingTwo weeks after the gala, Daniel realized that the true nightmare wasn't losing his company or his home—it was losing the illusion of his own importance.

Without the Whitmore name backing him, venture capitalists who used to answer his calls on the first ring now ignored his emails entirely. His former friends in high society conveniently forgot his phone number.

Khloe, realizing that Daniel was completely broke, unemployed, and facing potential fraud charges, had packed her bags and vanished within forty-eight hours of the scandal, leaving behind only a scathing note taped to the refrigerator of the cramped Oakland apartment.

Desperate and humiliated, Daniel decided to make one final, pathetic attempt to reach Victoria.

He waited outside the Whitmore Tower on a cold Tuesday morning, shivering in a cheap wool coat as executive cars pulled up to the private entrance.

When Victoria’s silver Bentley pulled up, Daniel rushed forward, ignoring the security guards who instantly intercepted him.

"Victoria! Please! Just five minutes!" Daniel cried out, his voice cracking as security grabbed his arms. "I made a mistake! I lost everything! Please, let's talk!"

Victoria stepped out of the car. She looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit, her expression completely detached, as if she were looking at a stranger on the street.

She signaled for the guards to release him.

Daniel stumbled forward, panting, his eyes bloodshot and pleading. "We were together for twelve years, Victoria. Doesn't that mean anything to you? Can't we start over?"

Victoria looked down at him with quiet pity.

"Twelve years ago, Daniel, I invested in a man who had a vision and the integrity to match it," Victoria said, her voice steady and cold. "The man standing in front of me is a stranger who traded his integrity for a twenty-nine-year-old’s applause."
