Chapter 27 - The Quiet Return to San FranciscoFollowing her triumphant return from Zurich, Victoria spent a quiet week overseeing the final philanthropic allocations of the Whitmore-Vance Foundation.

One afternoon, as her car was stopped at a red light near Union Square in downtown San Francisco, she happened to look out the window.

On the sidewalk, huddled beneath the awning of a closed storefront to escape a sudden drizzle, was Khloe Carter.

She wore a cheap plastic poncho over her clothes, her hair damp and stringy, holding a cardboard sign that read: Desperately seeking employment – Any administrative work considered.

The woman who had once stood at the center of the Fairmont ballroom holding a live microphone, boasting that she had stolen a CEO and a ten-million-dollar empire, was now entirely broken by the very society she had tried to conquer.

Victoria’s driver shifted gears as the traffic light turned green.
