The last syllable of Khloe’s toast hung in the air, tasting of sour champagne and reckless vanity. Six hundred people—investors, philanthropists, board members, and society columnists—held their collective breath. They had come to celebrate the annual Founders’ Gala for Hayes Dynamics, anticipating a pleasant evening of quiet networking and charitable donations. Instead, they had just witnessed a public execution of professional etiquette. / Chapter 3 / 30

Chapter 3 - The Audit UnfoldsThe ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers. Investors stood up from their tables, frantically dialing their brokers.

Daniel stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the dais. "Augustus... sir. Please. This is a misunderstanding. It’s a private family matter—"

"A private family matter doesn't involve public corporate assets being promised to a junior staffer as a trophy," Augustus interrupted, not even looking at Daniel. He turned his gaze to Marcus Whitmore, Victoria’s cousin and the lead legal counsel for the family trust, who stepped forward holding a thick leather folder.

Marcus opened the folder under the blinding lights of the chandelier.

"Pursuant to Clause 9 of the Whitmore Capital Venture Agreement," Marcus announced loudly, projecting his voice across the room, "any executive officer engaging in gross fiduciary misconduct, asset misappropriation, or reputational endangerment of a subsidiary partner is subject to immediate executive suspension and asset forfeiture."

Marcus looked directly at Daniel. "Effective immediately, Daniel Hayes is stripped of his title as CEO of Hayes Dynamics. All corporate credit cards, company vehicles, and equity options are frozen pending a full forensic audit."

Khloe dropped the microphone. It hit the marble floor with a sharp, echoing shriek of feedback that made everyone wince.

"No! That's not legal!" Khloe screamed, tears of rage ruining her professional composure as she rushed toward the edge of the stage. "He promised me! We have a signed agreement! He’s the CEO!"
