Richard Bennett, the patriarch who had smugly lectured me in the airport lounge about supporting a rising star, discovered that his own retirement portfolio had been heavily tied into Daniel’s high-risk, unregistered investments.

When federal investigators froze Daniel’s illicit accounts, they audited every connected family asset.

Richard’s suburban home—the house where Daniel grew up—was hit with a federal lien to help pay back the restitution owed to the hospital and defrauded investors.

I sat in my downtown office, sipping an artisanal latte, as my corporate lawyer slid the finalized foreclosure notice across my desk.

"Richard is trying to contest the lien, claiming he didn't know the funds were derived from illegal pharmaceutical kickbacks," my attorney, Marcus Vance (no relation to Sophia, but a ruthless legal shark), chuckled dryly. "Unfortunately for him, our digital paper trail proves he actively helped conceal the funds during their family trip to Miami."

"Let him fight it," I replied, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering Chicago skyline. "People who build their lives on enabling deceit deserve to experience the foundation crumbling beneath them."
