Chapter 6 - The Airport Return and the Public HumiliationWhile Daniel was being escorted out of Chicago General by security, his family was still sitting stranded at Gate 42 in O'Hare, waiting for a husband and son who was never going to board that plane.

I didn't let them off easy. If they were going to participate in the erasure of my marriage, they were going to witness the fallout in spectacular fashion.
Early the next morning, I booked a first-class ticket to Miami—the exact destination printed on their boarding passes—and arrived at their connecting gate just as their boarding group was called.
Richard, Lauren, and Sophia were huddled near the gate agent, looking exhausted and frantic. Their phones were blowing up with missed calls from Daniel, who was currently sitting in a holding room awaiting federal questioning.
As I walked down the carpeted jetway toward them, my heels clicking with crisp authority, Sophia was the first to spot me.
Her face hardened into an expression of sheer venom. She stepped forward, blocking my path.
"You," Sophia spat, her voice laced with bitter fury. "What are you doing here? You ruined everything! Daniel called us from a holding cell an hour ago. What did you do?"
Richard and Lauren spun around, their eyes widening in shock as a small crowd of curious travelers began to turn and stare.
"I didn't ruin anything, Sophia," I said loudly, ensuring my voice carried across the entire boarding gate. "I simply returned what belonged to me. By the way, how does it feel to be an executive of an LLC facing federal wire fraud charges? Because your corporate filings list you as the sole primary beneficiary of stolen medical kickbacks."
Sophia’s mouth dropped open. Color drained from her face as she realized the game was up. "You... you can't prove—"
"I proved everything," I interrupted smoothly, pulling out my phone and showing her a copy of the federal indictment filed hours earlier. "The freeze order on Apex Horizon LLC went through at midnight. Your new downtown condo? Seized by federal asset forfeiture. Your bank accounts? Frozen. You’re broke, Sophia. And your boyfriend is currently trading his designer scrubs for an orange jumpsuit."
Richard stepped forward, his face flushed with impotent rage. "Rachel! Have you lost your mind? You’re destroying your own husband! We are family!"
"No, Richard," I said, turning to look him dead in the eye as the airport gate agent announced final boarding for our flight. "You stopped being family the moment you helped your son pack luggage for his mistress while lying to my face. Enjoy your flight home. Because when you get back, you’ll find out that Daniel didn't just lose his job—he lost everything."
I turned my back on them, stepped past the gate agent, and scanned my boarding pass.

As I walked down the jetway toward my first-class seat, I caught one final glimpse of them through the terminal glass: Sophia screaming into her phone, Richard staring blankly into space, and Lauren burying her face in her hands.
Their perfect little conspiracy had crashed and burned before it even left the runway.
