Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the ArchiveDaniel’s chest heaved as he stared at me across the dimly lit archive room. The professional veneer he wore so easily had completely cracked, revealing the panicked, desperate coward beneath.

"You didn't go to Paris," I said casually, spinning my pen between my fingers.
Daniel swallowed hard, taking a slow step toward me. "Rachel, please. Let's just go home. We can talk about this. The trip... it was a mistake. Sophia and I—it was just supposed to be a weekend getaway to clear our heads. My family was just trying to support me through a stressful period at work."
"Your family," I echoed, letting out a sharp, humorless laugh. "Daniel, your father told me to sign the divorce papers like a good little wife. Your sister helped pack matching luggage for your mistress. Don't talk to me about family."
"Look, I messed up!" Daniel’s voice cracked, rising in desperation as he glanced nervously at the open doorway. "Twelve years of marriage, Rachel! You can't just throw that away over a mistake! I love you! I want to fix this!"
I stood up slowly from the desk, smoothing down the lapels of my blazer. I walked around the mahogany table until I was standing only inches away from him. I could smell the stale airport coffee and expensive cologne he had bought for another woman.
"You didn't make a mistake, Daniel," I whispered, looking straight into his bloodshot eyes. "A mistake is forgetting to pick up milk on the way home. What you did was systematic, calculated, and predatory. You stole from our joint savings, you committed insurance fraud, and you traded medical ethics for kickbacks from your mistress's pharmaceutical firm."
Daniel froze. The color vanished from his face entirely, leaving him a ghastly, ashen gray.
"What... what did you say?" he whispered, his voice trembling.
I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out the encrypted flash drive, and held it up so the blue LED light caught his eye.
"I pulled the Q3 compliance audit, Daniel. Every single kickback invoice, every falsified patient log, every wire transfer to Apex Horizon LLC. It’s all right here. Copied, backed up, and queued to be automatically forwarded to the hospital's Board of Ethics, the State Medical Board, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation at exactly 8:00 AM tomorrow morning."
Daniel lunged forward, his hands darting out to grab my wrist. "Give me that drive! Rachel, you can't do that! That will destroy me! That will ruin my career, my life, everything I’ve worked for!"
Before his fingers could graze my jacket, a sharp, authoritative voice boomed from the doorway.
"Step away from Mrs. Bennett, Dr. Bennett."
We both whipped our heads around. Standing in the doorway was Chief of Surgery Dr. Marcus Vance—no relation to Sophia, but a man who took hospital integrity more seriously than anything in the world—flanked by two armed hospital security officers.
Daniel stumbled backward, his hands hovering uselessly in the air. "Chief Vance... wait, let me explain, this is a misunderstanding—"
May you like
"There is no misunderstanding, Daniel," I said smoothly, stepping past him and handing the flash drive directly to Dr. Vance. "Here is your compliance audit. I believe you’ll find your department has a severe leak."
Dr. Vance took the drive, his expression turning to stone as he looked at Daniel. "Dr. Bennett, turn in your badge and keys immediately. You are suspended pending a full federal investigation."
