Chapter 10 - The New Dawn

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet, amber, and fiery blush—the exact color palette I had chosen for the floral arrangements.
We sat around the long, candlelit table under a canopy of fairy lights that twinkled like distant stars. Ben was laughing hysterically as one of my oldest friends told an embarrassing story about my college days, while Chloe and Maya helped themselves to a second slice of the towering five-tier wedding cake, which we had repurposed into a magnificent celebration of survival and renewal.
I raised my glass of sparkling cider, catching the amber light in the crystal rim.
The kids stopped talking, looking up at me with warm, glowing expressions. Around the table, my true friends raised their glasses in unison, their eyes shining with quiet solidarity.
"To new beginnings," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly down the length of the table. "To truth, to family, and to never settling for anything less than genuine love."
"To Mom!" Ben shouted, raising his glass higher than anyone else's, his young face bright with pride and absolute security.
