Chapter 16 - The Legal Checkmate

Two weeks later, the civil court proceedings began in downtown San Francisco. Even though Nathan was already locked away awaiting his federal criminal trial, his defense team attempted to file an emergency injunction to contest the asset seizure of his startup’s patents, claiming coercion and undue influence during our engagement period.
Victoria Vance and I walked into Courtroom 3B with the calm, methodical precision of a military operation.
Across the aisle sat a sweaty, overworked public defender representing Nathan’s financial interests, flanked by an equally exhausted Linda, who had spent the past fortnight trying and failing to raise bail money from former friends who now crossed the street to avoid her.
Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense magistrate with thirty years on the bench, adjusted his spectacles and looked down over his wooden podium at the mountain of paperwork piled high before him.
"Counsel for the plaintiff," Judge Harrison said, fixing his gaze on Victoria. "You are moving for a complete summary dismissal of the defendant’s injunction?"
"We are, Your Honor," Victoria stated clearly, stepping up to the podium. "Furthermore, we are presenting additional evidence proving that the defendant, Nathaniel Cross, systematically engineered a fraudulent financial scheme specifically designed to strip my client of her pre-existing, inherited real estate and personal savings."
She handed up a certified flash drive containing the complete, unedited audio recording of Nathan and Linda’s phone conversation, accompanied by forensic audio enhancement logs proving its complete authenticity.
The public defender stood up, looking panicked. "Objection, Your Honor! Private communications illegally obtained—"
"Mr. Cross left his FaceTime line wide open while broadcasting his criminal intentions to his mother in an open-air public residence," Judge Harrison interrupted smoothly, not even looking up. "There is no reasonable expectation of privacy when you are actively plotting grand larceny over an open telecommunication channel. Objection overruled."
Linda let out a sharp gasp in the gallery, her face turning pale as paper.
"Furthermore," Judge Harrison continued, reading from the summary judgment, "the court finds that the asset transfers and intellectual property liquidations executed by Ms. Sharon Vance are entirely legal, binding, and executed in direct self-defense against corporate fraud. The defendant’s injunction is permanently denied. All assets remain in the sole possession of the plaintiff."

The gavel came down with a crisp, definitive crack that echoed through the quiet courtroom.
It was over. Legally, financially, and emotionally, the game was finished.
