Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Empire

"You absolute monster!" someone shouted from the back of the crowd—one of my college fraternity friends, stepping forward with fists clenched.
Nathan stood paralyzed, his career, his reputation, and his elaborate financial heist crumbling around him in real time. The elite circle he had spent years trying to infiltrate, impress, and ultimately exploit was now staring at him with undisguised revulsion and disgust.
I calmly lowered the microphone, letting the audio loop fade into the warm afternoon air. I turned to face him, my expression completely devoid of mercy.
"The wedding is officially cancelled, Nathan," I said softly, loud enough for the front rows to catch every syllable. "And as for the legal documents you brought me today? My attorneys have already forwarded them, along with your complete financial audit, to the federal prosecutor's office and every single investor whose capital you embezzled."
Linda broke past her paralysis, screeching like a wounded bird as she lunged toward the stage. "You ruined us! You calculated, cold-hearted witch, you ruined my boy!"
Before she could reach the steps, two burly private security guards—hired discreetly that morning—stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her ascent with impassive, immovable professionalism.
"Step back, ma'am," the lead guard stated, his voice flat and authoritative. "Property management and federal officers are currently securing the perimeter."
True to his word, three unmarked black sedans rolled smoothly up the gravel driveway behind the catering tents, their doors swinging open to reveal two federal investigators in dark suits accompanied by local police officers. They didn't run; they walked with the slow, inevitable momentum of an incoming tide.
Nathan watched them approach, his knees finally buckling. He caught himself against the edge of the mahogany sweetheart table, knocking over a crystal vase of blush roses that spilled red and pink water across the white tablecloth like a spreading stain.

"Sharon... please," Nathan choked out, his voice barely a whisper, tears finally spilling over his carefully maintained facade. "We can talk about this. Please... think of what this does to us."
"There is no us, Nathan," I said, my voice as cold as winter stone. "There never was."
