Chapter 11 - The Aftershocks

The morning headlines didn’t disappoint. Local news outlets ran the scandalous exposé under screaming banner titles: “Silicon Valley Startup Founder Arrested for Mid-Wedding Fraud Scheme!” and “Groom’s Greedy Plot Unmasked at Luxury Garden Ceremony by Clever Bride.” The digital footprint of Nathan’s disgrace spread faster than wildfire across social media platforms, complete with leaked audio snippets of his venomous phone call echoing on TikTok and X.

I sat at our kitchen island, sipping freshly brewed coffee while scrolling through the digital fallout on my tablet. Ben, Chloe, and Maya were gathered around the table, quietly eating their pancakes before the school bus arrived. For the first time in years, the heavy, invisible tension that usually accompanied our household routines was entirely absent. The air felt lighter, crisp with the promise of a genuine fresh start.

"Are kids at school going to talk about this?" Ben asked, pausing with his fork halfway to his mouth, looking up at me with a mixture of adolescent worry and lingering awe.

"Some might," I answered calmly, reaching across the table to ruffle his messy morning hair. "Let them talk. The truth is on our side, and nobody in this house has anything to be ashamed of. If anyone has questions, you just hold your heads high."

Maya smiled, a bright, beaming expression that mirrored her late mother's. "We’re not scared of them, Mom. We've got you."

Just then, a sharp, urgent rapping echoed from our front porch. I didn't need to check the security monitor to know who it was. The frantic, uncoordinated rhythm of the knocks bore all the desperate desperation of a cornered animal.
