Chapter 12 - The Unwelcome Visitor on the Porch

I walked slowly to the front door, pulling it open just a few inches. Linda stood on the Welcome mat, looking ten years older than she had at the altar. Her designer jacket was wrinkled, her hair unbrushed, and her eyes rimmed with angry, exhausted red circles. The smug, untouchable matriarch was completely gone, replaced by a desperate woman drowning in the wreckage of her own ambition.

"Sharon, please," Linda choked out, her voice cracking as she pressed a trembling hand against the wooden doorframe. "You have to call your attorney. You have to tell the federal prosecutor that this was all... a terrible misunderstanding. Nathan is facing ten years! They’ve frozen all our accounts—we can’t even pay our legal fees!"

"A misunderstanding, Linda?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm as I looked down at her from the threshold. "Was the audio recording a misunderstanding? Was the forged asset waiver a misunderstanding? Or was it just bad luck that your son forgot to hang up his phone?"

"He's my only boy!" she wailed, abandoning any remaining shred of dignity as a couple of neighbors peeked through their living room windows down the suburban street. "He made a mistake! Young men make bad business choices under pressure—"

"He attempted to steal my ancestral home, defraud my children of their financial security, and laughed about it with you while calling my kids 'freaks,'" I interrupted, every word dropping like an iron weight between us. "That isn't a bad business choice, Linda. That’s who you both are."

"You heartless bitch!" Linda’s mask snapped instantly back into raw, venomous hatred, her voice rising to a shrill shriek as she lunged toward the gap in the door. "You ruined us! You set him up from the very beginning!"

Before she could step foot inside, two neighborhood security officers—whom I had placed on retainer the previous evening—stepped out from the side hedge, gently but firmly intercepting her and steering her back toward the sidewalk.

"Step away from the property, ma'am," the guard instructed flatly. "You are officially served with a permanent restraining order."

Linda cursed furiously, stumbling backward down the steps as my front door clicked firmly and permanently shut.
