Chapter 9 - Ashes to Roses

The venue was eerily quiet by late afternoon. The federal investigators had finished collecting their evidence, the caterers had begun packing up untouched trays of hors d'oeuvres, and the sea of blush and gold decorations fluttered gently in the evening breeze.

I was still wearing my bridal gown. Not because I was holding onto any delusion about the day, but because the heavy silk felt like armor.

Victoria Vance walked out from the estate office, carrying a thick leather folder and a warm smile.

"It’s done, Sharon," Victoria said, handing me a fresh set of documents. "The asset freeze is absolute. Nathan's corporate accounts have been seized by federal receivers, and his mother’s secondary property has been legally detached from any liability regarding your estate. Your home, your savings, and your children’s trust funds are completely secure."

"Thank you, Victoria," I said, signing the final closure papers with a steady hand. "More than you know."

"What are you going to do with all this food and the venue booking?" she asked, gesturing toward the sprawling, empty gardens where thousands of dollars worth of gourmet cuisine and floral arrangements sat waiting.

I smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to my eyes. "Cancel the wedding. Turn it into a family celebration."

Within an hour, word had gone out to the people who actually mattered. My closest friends, our favorite neighbors, and a few select relatives who had always loved my children unconditionally returned to the gardens. We stripped away the formal seating charts, pushed the elegant blush and gold tables together into one long, chaotic banquet, and traded champagne flutes for mismatched wine glasses.

There was no formal liturgy, no expensive photographer capturing staged kisses, and no fake smiles.

Just laughter, rich food, good wine, and the sweet, intoxicating air of absolute freedom.
