Chapter 6 - The Unveiling

I picked up the microphone. The sharp, high-pitched feedback squeal cut through the garden chatter, instantly commanding total silence. Two hundred faces turned toward the dais, smiling expectantly, holding up champagne flutes ready for a toast.
Beside me, Nathan stood frozen like a deer caught in high beams, his mouth moving mutely, unable to form a single word of protest.
"Good afternoon, everyone," I began, my voice carrying effortlessly across the manicured lawn, steady and crystal clear. "Thank you all so much for coming today to celebrate what is undeniably a historic milestone in my life."
A light ripple of polite laughter and applause fluttered through the audience.
"When Nathan and I first met, I believed I had found a rare kind of grace," I continued, my eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on my three children—Ben, Chloe, and Maya—sitting in the front row alongside my loyal friends. They looked back at me with fierce, unwavering pride. They knew. They had known every step of the way. "I believed he loved my children. I believed he cherished our family."
Nathan took a desperate half-step toward me, his hand raised in a silent, pleading gesture. Don't, his terrified eyes screamed. Please, not here.
I didn't blink. I pressed a button on the small remote hidden in my palm.
Instantly, the massive LED screen behind the sweetheart table—which was supposed to display romantic slideshow photos of our engagement—flickered. The romantic music cut out.
Instead, the raw, unedited audio recording of Nathan and Linda’s phone conversation blasted through the professional sound system at maximum volume, echoing off the garden walls and ricocheting across the estate.
“Once we are officially married, I will take her house and her savings... Especially with those little freak kids of hers. She is completely desperate for some stability. She totally disgusts me...”

The garden erupted into instant, stunned pandemonium.
Gasps echoed from every corner. Champagne flutes dropped, shattering against the stone paving stones. Several of Nathan’s wealthy business associates spat out their drinks in sheer disbelief, their eyes darting from the speakers to the pale, shaking figure of the groom. Linda let out a strangled shriek and buried her face in her hands, her social standing evaporating into thin air within a matter of seconds.
