Chapter 13 - The Corporate Takeover

By noon, I was seated in the sleek, glass-walled boardroom of Victoria Vance’s downtown law firm. The view overlooked the bustling financial district, a stark contrast to the quiet suburban sanctuary of my home. Across the polished walnut table sat three senior partners specializing in corporate restructuring and white-collar asset recovery.

"The federal indictment against Nathaniel Cross was officially sealed this morning," Victoria announced, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier across the table. "Furthermore, because of the forensic audit we conducted prior to the wedding, the courts have granted us immediate receivership over the remaining shell companies he and his mother operated."

"What does that mean for us practically?" I asked, leaning forward, resting my hands on the table.

"It means every single asset Nathan tried to hide or siphon is being legally repatriated," Victoria smiled thinly. "Not only is your home and personal savings completely secure, but the court has also awarded you full ownership rights over the intellectual property of his startup—which, as it turns out, has several valuable patents currently sought after by major tech conglomerates."

I blinked in surprise. The man who had planned to leave me with absolutely nothing had accidentally handed me the keys to his entire corporate empire.

"Can we liquidate the patents?" I asked, calculating the long-term security for Ben, Chloe, and Maya.

"Easily," Victoria nodded approvingly. "We’ve already received two multi-million-dollar buyout offers from competing tech firms this morning. You are looking at a very substantial financial windfall—completely independent, entirely in your name, and untouchable by any future creditors."

The irony was staggering. Nathan had hunted a wealthy single mother for her savings, only to find himself dismantled by her brilliance and funding her children's Ivy League trust funds with his own stolen intellectual property.
