Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

"Sharon... where—how—" Nathan stammered, his polished composure dissolving in real time. He took a half-step toward me, his hands raised defensively. "That’s... that’s AI. That’s a deepfake! Someone’s trying to sabotage us, babe, you know how jealous people are of what we have—"

"Save it, Nathan," I interrupted, my voice dropping all pretense of warmth. It was flat, cold, and heavy as iron. The transformation was so abrupt it stopped him dead in his tracks.

Linda recovered her voice first, her maternal instinct mutating instantly into sharp, venomous panic. "You manipulative little bitch!" she shrieked, pointing a trembling, diamond-ringed finger at my face. "You set him up! You tricked my boy into trusting you!"

"I didn't trick anyone, Linda," I said, turning my gaze slowly toward her. "Your son left the FaceTime line open while he gloated about stealing my children's inheritance. I simply listened. And then, I exercised my right as a sane adult to protect my family."

Nathan’s eyes darted to the desk, then back to me, the panic in his chest morphing into a dangerous, cornered fury. The mask of the doting, sweet-natured fiancé was completely gone, replaced by the bitter, calculating stranger I had never truly known.

"You think you’re so smart, don't you?" Nathan snarled, stepping up to the desk and slamming his palm against the wood. "You’re an aging single mother with three baggage kids! Who the hell else was ever going to look at you? I played nice because I had to, but you’re nothing without a man to manage your life!"

"Is that right?" I asked calmly, pulling a folded document from inside the hidden pocket of my bridal gown and tossing it onto the desk, right over his fake contract.

Nathan looked down at it. His eyes scanned the first paragraph, and the remaining color in his cheeks vanished completely.

It was not the document he expected. It was a comprehensive forensic audit of his startup’s financials, exposing millions in hidden debt, fraudulent investor statements, and personal embezzlement—all funneled through shell accounts managed by Linda. Attached to it was an emergency injunction filed that very morning by my corporate counsel, freezing every joint asset he had tried to attach to my name and notifying federal authorities of his corporate fraud.

"You’re not taking my house, Nathan," I whispered, stepping close enough for him to smell the expensive perfume he claimed to despise. "You’re taking a federal indictment."
