Chapter 3 - The Mahogany Trap

The private study was cool, smelling faintly of aged leather and polished mahogany. Resting squarely in the center of the executive desk was a sleek leather binder, open to the final signature page. A golden Montblanc pen lay right beside it, gleaming under the brass desk lamp.

Nathan walked over to the desk with the purposeful stride of a general claiming conquered territory. He picked up the pen, tested the ink on a scrap pad, and handed it to me with a look of intense, almost trembling urgency.

"Just sign right here on the dotted line, babe," Nathan said, his voice dropping an octave into a soothing, patronizing register. "Just a formality for the mortgage consolidation. You know how banks are—they love their red tape."

I looked down at the paper. It wasn't a mortgage consolidation. A quick glance at the header revealed the true nature of the document: a total relinquishment of sole-ownership deeds, transferring my family home and investment accounts directly into a joint holding company controlled entirely by Nathan and, crucially, his mother as primary executor.

"It’s amazing how thorough you are, Nathan," I said softly, tracing the edge of the desk with my manicured fingernail. "You think of everything."

"Well, I have to protect us, don't I?" he chuckled, flashing a quick, conspiratorial glance at Linda, who was hovering near the door like a gargoyle. "We’re a team now. Your past is behind us. Those kids of yours need stability, and I’m providing it."

"Those little freak kids of mine," I repeated, the words dropping into the quiet room like lead weights.

Nathan froze. The pen hovered an inch above the paper. His smile strained at the edges. "What did you say?"

I didn't answer right away. Instead, I calmly walked over to the AV control panel embedded in the oak wall, plugged a small flash drive into the auxiliary port, and pressed a single button on my phone.

Instantly, the high-fidelity sound system concealed in the ceiling speakers crackled to life.

“Once we are officially married, I will take her house and her savings. She will be left with absolutely nothing. It is perfect. I truly cannot wait to get rid of her. She totally disgusts me...”

Nathan’s voice echoed off the mahogany bookshelves, crystal clear, dripping with utter contempt.

Linda gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes darting wildly between her son and me.

Nathan dropped the pen. It clattered sharply against the wood, rolling off the edge and hitting the Persian rug with a dull thud. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the harsh brass light.
