Chapter 13 - The Return of the Forgotten Heir

Up in the sunlit conservatory of the Lake Geneva estate, the morning breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine.

Maxwell Sterling sat at a wrought-iron table, watching seven-year-old Emma carefully watercolor a picture of her father’s truck, while Michael poured fresh coffee nearby.

The peace of the morning was shattered by the shrill ring of Maxwell’s satellite phone.

Maxwell answered sharply. “Sterling.”

“Max, you need to listen to me,” Maris’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and strained. “I’m down in the archives with Julian Thorne. He says there’s a secondary corporate claimant—someone named Richard Sterling Jr., your estranged half-brother’s son.”

Maxwell went completely still. The coffee mug in his hand trembled slightly against the saucer.

“Richard died twenty years ago,” Maxwell said coldly.

“His son didn't,” Maris countered rapidly. “And according to the documents Julian just recovered, Richard Jr. holds an unrevoked secondary proxy on thirty percent of Sterling Innovations' founding assets. If he files an emergency injunction before noon today, he can legally seize the Lake Geneva estate and freeze the Hayes-Sterling Foundation.”

Before Maxwell could answer, the security intercom at the main estate gates buzzed violently.

“Mr. Sterling,” the chief of security’s voice crackled through the console, sounding frantic. “We have an uninvited convoy at the front gates. A man demanding immediate entry, claiming he holds the master deed to the property.”
