Chapter 8 - The Truth Unveiled

Back at the Lake Geneva estate, a roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace of the private library.

Emma had fallen asleep on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, still clutching her wooden bird.

Michael sat across from Maxwell at a heavy oak table, staring at a collection of old photographs, legal documents, and DNA test verifications Maris had managed to pull together in record time.

“Sarah never told you?” Michael asked quietly, shaking his head. “She told me her family abandoned her when she was young. She didn't even know you were the Maxwell Sterling until she saw your picture on a financial magazine five years before she passed.”

Maxwell stared into the flames, a profound, agonizing grief washing over him. “I was a coward, Michael. I was so terrified of being poor again, so terrified of failure, that I threw away the only family that could have saved me from my own cold heart.” He looked across the table, his eyes locking onto Michael’s calloused hands. “And now... you raised my flesh and blood. You gave her a home when I didn't even know she existed.”

Michael let out a long, slow breath, the hostility finally draining from his posture. He looked at Emma sleeping peacefully across the room, then back at the billionaire.

“Sarah was a good mother,” Michael said softly. “She taught Emma how to be kind, how to care for people even when the world is cold.” He paused, offering a faint, weary smile. “Looks like she taught her well enough to save your life.”

Maxwell bowed his head, letting out a ragged breath as tears finally tracked down his weathered cheeks.
