Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

The following morning, federal marshals led Evelyn Vance and Jonathan Vance out of Sterling Tower in handcuffs, cameras flashing blindingly against the winter snow. The live broadcast beamed across every major news network in the country, spelling the absolute collapse of the corporate conspiracy that had threatened the Sterling dynasty from within.
Inside his private office, watching the broadcast on a wall-mounted screen, Maxwell Sterling felt a strange, unfamiliar lightness settle in his chest.
The empire was secure. The vipers were caged.
More importantly, the empty chair at his dining table was no longer cold.
In the sunlit conservatory overlooking the snow-covered gardens of the Lake Geneva estate, Emma was sitting at a low mahogany table, drawing pictures with colorful markers.
Maxwell walked in slowly, leaning on his cane, and sat down in the chair beside her.
Emma looked up, tilting her head with those familiar, piercing hazel-green eyes.
“Are you still feeling sad, Mr. Sterling?” she asked.

Maxwell smiled—a real, unforced smile that reached his eyes for the first time in twenty-two years. He reached into his pocket and placed a small, polished silver token on the table—a little carved bird that matched the one she wore around her neck.
“Not anymore, Emma Bear,” Maxwell said softly, taking her small hand in his calloused palm. “Not anymore.”
