Chapter 17 - The Golden Horizon

Two years later, the Hayes-Sterling Foundation hosted its inaugural national gala at Beaumont House in Charleston—the very same ballroom where a frightened little girl had once wandered across the dance floor and handed a crushed white flower to a lonely billionaire.

This time, the room was filled not with cold corporate elites, but with working-class families, scholarship recipients, doctors, engineers, and children laughing without a care in the world.

Ten-year-old Emma stood on the grand stage, wearing a simple blue dress, holding a microphone to announce the opening of the evening’s scholarship grants.

“Welcome, everyone,” Emma said clearly, her hazel-green eyes shining brightly under the crystal chandeliers. “My dad always taught me that cars are a responsibility. But my grandpa taught me that people are a choice.”

In the front row, Maxwell sat beside Michael and Elena, feeling a warmth in his chest he had never known was possible.
