Chapter 18 - The Unbroken Circle

Later that night, long after the music had faded and the guests had departed, Maxwell walked alone along the moonlit shoreline of Lake Geneva.
The water lapped softly against the wooden dock, mirroring the brilliant canopy of stars overhead.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, hand-carved wooden bird with the notched left wing. He held it up to the pale moonlight, whispering softly into the quiet night air:
“We made it, Alberto. We finally learned how to fly.”
Footsteps crunched softly on the wooden planks behind him.

Warm arms wrapped around his waist, and a soft voice whispered, “Come inside, Max. It’s getting cold out here.”
Maxwell turned, looking down into Elena’s loving eyes, and for the first time in his life, he didn't feel the need to look back. He took her hand, walked back toward the warm lights of the house, and stepped gladly into a future that would never end.
