Two hours later, Michael and Emma were escorted back to their modest apartment on the West Side by a private black sedan, courtesy of Sterling Innovations.
Meanwhile, inside the penthouse office of Sterling Tower overlooking a snow-draped Chicago skyline, Evelyn Vance was pacing furiously across the Persian rug.
Her phone buzzed violently on the glass desk. She snatched it up.
“Talk to me,” Evelyn snapped.
“It’s verified,” a low voice spoke through the secure encrypted line. “Maxwell’s private DNA archives from his historical medical files match the genetic markers of the Hayes girl. She isn't just a random bystander, Evelyn. She is blood.”
Evelyn’s breath hitched. The foundation of her entire professional life—her twenty-year plan to inherit the multi-billion-dollar Sterling estate—was suddenly hanging by a thread.

“If Marcus finds out she’s his granddaughter,” Evelyn whispered, panic clawing at her throat, “he’ll rewrite the entire corporate trust tomorrow morning. He’ll leave everything to a construction worker and a seven-year-old brat.”
“Then we make sure he doesn't live long enough to sign the papers,” the voice on the other end whispered back.
