Chapter 6 - The Lake Geneva Sanctuary

By evening, the heavy iron security gates of the Sterling estate in Lake Geneva swung open to admit the armored black SUV carrying Emma and her father.

Michael sat in the passenger seat, his jaw clenched, clutching a police incident report in his calloused hands. He didn't want charity, and he certainly didn't trust billionaires, but after seeing the sheared brake line, he knew his daughter wasn't safe anywhere in Chicago.

Maxwell was waiting for them in the grand, vaulted foyer, leaning heavily on a carved mahogany cane, his silver hair neatly combed despite his exhaustion.

When the front doors opened and Emma stepped inside, wrapped in a warm coat, Maxwell’s knees nearly buckled.

“Welcome home,” Maxwell whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

Michael stepped between them, his eyes sharp and defensive. “Look, Mr. Sterling, let’s get one thing straight. You saved us from whatever lunatic is targeting my truck by bringing us out here, but I am not your charity case. I want answers. Why are people trying to kill us because of you?”

Maxwell didn't flinch. He looked at Michael with absolute, unwavering sincerity.

“Because twenty-two years ago, I walked away from the only woman who ever mattered to me,” Maxwell said quietly, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. “And last night, I realized the little girl who saved my life isn't just a stranger. She is my granddaughter.”

The cavernous foyer went utterly silent.

Michael stared at him, stunned into speechlessness. “Your... what?”
