Chapter 16 - The Healing of the House

By late afternoon, the estate had returned to a profound, unbreakable silence.

The threat was gone. The shadows of the past had been legally, permanently eradicated.

Inside the grand library, Maxwell sat by the stone fireplace, watching the flames crackle warmly against the hearth.

Michael walked in, holding two glasses of scotch, and handed one to the older man. They stood in silence for a moment, looking out the tall bay windows toward the gardens where Emma was chasing butterflies with absolute, unburdened joy.

“You handled that like a true CEO, Max,” Michael offered with a faint, respectful smile.

Maxwell clinked his glass gently against Michael’s. “I’m not a CEO when I’m here, Michael. I’m just a grandfather.”

Elena—who had flown in from Savannah earlier that afternoon to join them—walked into the library, wrapping her arms around Maxwell’s shoulders from behind and resting her head gently against his.

“The foundation papers cleared federal oversight this morning,” Elena whispered happily. “The Savannah community center is officially permanent.”

Maxwell reached up, covering her hand with his own. His eyes misted slightly as he looked at the wooden bird resting on the mantelpiece—the symbol of survival, resilience, and love that had bridged two entirely different worlds.
