Chapter 15 - The Basement SiegeSamuel retreated back inside, slamming the heavy reinforced oak door and throwing the deadbolts.

"Clara! Did you get the girls down?" Samuel shouted, rushing toward the hallway.

"They're in the safe room, but the phone lines are dead! The cell jammers are active!" Clara called out, her voice trembling but resolute as she grabbed a heavy brass fireplace poker. "They want the documents from your mother's box, don't they?"

"They want everything," Samuel said, his mind racing through tactical options. The local police were twenty minutes away, and the cell jammers rendered all satellite devices useless inside the house.

Suddenly, the smart-home security panel on the wall chimed.

A synthesized digital voice echoed through the house: "Mr. Andrews. You hold papers that do not belong to you. Open the back kitchen door within sixty seconds, or we burn this entire street to the ground."

Samuel looked down at the original patent documents resting on the kitchen counter. If he gave them up, his entire empire—and everything he had built for Clara and the twins—would be destroyed. If he didn't, the house would become their tomb.
