Chapter 5 - Reunited in the RuinsThe nursery was quiet again, save for baby Noah, who had drifted back into a peaceful sleep.

Adrian stood motionless in the center of the room, the black box still gripped tightly in his hands. Slowly, he turned his head to look at Clara.
Up close, without the disguise of the frumpy maid’s uniform and heavy glasses, she was breathtakingly familiar yet terrifyingly foreign. She was a woman hardened by betrayal, sculpted by a fierce, burning desire for justice and protection.
"Clara," he choked out, the name feeling foreign and heavy on his tongue after five years of mourning a ghost. "You’re... you’re really here."
Clara didn't rush into his arms. She didn't cry. She stood tall, her hands resting calmly by her sides, looking at him with a chilling detachment that hurt Adrian far more than any physical blow could have.
"I am," she said quietly. "Though I wish I had stayed dead. Coming back to see the man I loved wrapped around the arms of my killer... it’s a special kind of hell, Adrian."
Adrian flinched, taking a step toward her. "Clara, I swear to God, I didn't know. If I had known Vanessa was behind your disappearance—"
"You would have noticed," Clara interrupted sharply, her eyes flashing. "You were too busy building your empire, Adrian. Too blind to see the snake you brought into our home. But none of that matters now."
She looked down. Little Sophie had quietly slipped her small hand into Clara’s palm. Clara’s expression softened instantly, the razor-sharp edge melting away as she squeezed her daughter’s fingers.
"What matters is that my daughter kept me alive," Clara murmured, looking back up at Adrian. "She knew. Even when everyone told her she was crazy, she kept the proof safe."
Adrian dropped to his knees in front of Sophie. He looked at his little girl, seeing the immense weight she had carried alone for years.

"Sophie... sweetie," Adrian’s voice cracked, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry I failed you both."
Sophie stared at him coldly, pulling her hand slightly closer to her mother. "You believed her over me, Daddy. It’s going to take a long time for me to forgive you."
