Chapter 15 - Blood in the Dark

Chaos erupted in the span of a single heartbeat.
I dropped into a tactical roll across the concrete floor as a burst of automatic gunfire chewed up the space where I had been standing a second earlier. Sparks showered down like fireworks against the rusted shipping containers.
"Secure the girl!" I shouted into my earpiece, drawing my Beretta and squeezing off two rapid shots toward the muzzle flashes coming from the shadows near the back wall.
A muffled grunt followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor confirmed one target down.
I scrambled across the rough concrete, tracking the sound of Sophie’s terrified sobbing. "Sophie! Don't move! Keep your head down!"
"Mr. Moretti!" Elena screamed from across the room, struggling against her bonds as another burst of gunfire chipped concrete inches from her chair.
I reached Sophie in the darkness, throwing my body over hers just as a hail of submachine-gun fire shredded the wooden crate behind us. I pulled my combat knife from my calf sheath in one fluid motion and sliced through the nylon zip-ties binding the little girl's wrists.
"Hold onto my coat, Sophie. Don't let go," I ordered, lifting her into my arms as she buried her face in my shoulder, trembling violently.
Across the warehouse, Bruno and his tactical team poured through the shattered side doors, their night-vision goggles casting an eerie green glow over the carnage. Flashbangs detonated with blinding white light and concussive shockwaves that rattled my teeth.
"Clear!" Bruno’s voice barked over the tactical channel. "Target neutralized! Perimeter secure!"
I stood up slowly in the settling smoke, holding Sophie tightly against my chest. The scarred man lay motionless near the far wall, neutralized by a clean shot from our sniper.
Elena was already untied by one of Bruno’s men, rushing over to us with tears streaming down her face. She snatched Sophie from my arms, pulling her child into a desperate, sobbing embrace.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Moretti! They threatened my brother in Naples! They said if I didn't help them plant the beacon, they would kill him!" Elena sobbed uncontrollably, falling to her knees on the dusty concrete.

"Get them back to the estate," I told Bruno, my eyes fixed on the dead man's phone lying on the floor beside his outstretched hand. The screen was still lit, displaying an open text conversation with a contact labeled simply: The Chairman.
I picked up the phone. The last outgoing message read: Bait taken. Setting the final trap.
