Chapter 18 - The Final Confrontation

Before Arthur could finish his sentence, the heavy glass doors behind me hissed shut, locking automatically with a loud, mechanical click.

Simultaneously, the recessed ceiling lights flickered and died, plunging the grand foyer into absolute darkness.

"Trap!" Bruno’s voice crackled frantically through my earpiece from outside. "Boss, the entire perimeter grid just locked down! We're locked out!"

I didn't panic. My senses sharpened to a razor's edge. I raised my Beretta, using the tritium night-sights to scan the darkened room.

"You really thought I’d invite you into my home without insurance, Adrien?" Arthur’s voice echoed through the invisible surround-sound speakers, bouncing off the glass walls from every direction. "Your father built this empire on blood and paranoia. I perfected it."

From the shadows of the second-floor mezzanine, the harsh chatter of automatic weapons fire erupted downward. Bullets shattered the glass bar behind me, sending crystal shards flying like shrapnel across the floor.

I dove behind a massive marble pillar, returning fire toward the muzzle flashes on the mezzanine.

Bang! Bang!

A heavy body slumped over the glass railing upstairs and crashed down hard onto the foyer floor. One down. Two more mercenaries emerged from the darkness flanking the grand staircase, raising their rifles.

I rolled out from behind the pillar, firing twice with cold, mechanical precision. Both targets dropped instantly.

Silence descended on the foyer once more, broken only by the heavy sound of my own breathing and the distant crashing of the ocean waves against the cliffs outside.

"Impressive," Arthur’s voice echoed again, sounding closer now.

I stepped out from behind the pillar, my pistol raised, sweeping the corners of the room. Near the private elevator at the back of the foyer, the door slid open, revealing Arthur standing inside, his hand resting calmly on the emergency stop button.

"It ends here, Arthur," I said, stepping forward.

"Does it?" Arthur smiled, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket and holding it up. "This key opens the vault downstairs. Inside is the complete archive of your father's hidden assets, the syndicate ledgers, and the truth about why he abandoned you."

He tossed the key across the marble floor. It skidded to a halt right at my boots.

"Kill me, and the secret dies with me," Arthur whispered, his eyes gleaming with madness. "Or take the key, step into the elevator, and claim your throne."
