Chapter 7 - The Final Stand in the Nursery

The federal raid was swift, surgical, and ultimately useless against a man who kept three backup escape routes beneath his estate. By the time the lead investigator, Agent Miller, kicked open the door to the master study, the room was empty save for a neatly folded stack of documents detailing Julian and Marcus's conspiracy, alongside a comprehensive hard drive containing every transaction routing to Dante Morelle’s offshore accounts in the Caymans.
I wasn't running. I was waiting.
Ten minutes later, my private encrypted phone buzzed. It wasn't an audio call this time; it was a secure video link from a burner channel originating from a private airstrip outside Milan.
I tapped accept.
Dante Morelle’s face appeared on the screen, but he didn't look like the untouchable syndicate kingpin he had been an hour ago. His hair was disheveled, his private jet's cabin lights flickering as emergency engines whirred in the background.
"Adrien," Dante breathed heavily, staring into the lens with desperate fury. "You burned my entire network. Every Swiss account, every shell corporation—frozen by noon."
"You forgot the golden rule of the underworld, Dante," I said calmly, pouring myself a fresh glass of single malt as I sat behind my mahogany desk. "Never wage a war against a man who has nothing left to lose except his children."
"You think you won?" Dante snarled, his voice cracking with panic. "My men are already airborne. Even if you locked me out, your empire is fractured. Your credibility in the syndicate is dead."
"My empire was built on blood and steel long before you learned how to launder money through European real estate," I replied coldly. "And as for my credibility? The moment I hand Interpol your entire ledger, the rest of the council will realize what happens when someone touches a Moretti."
Dante stared at me through the screen, the horrific realization dawning in his eyes that his entire life’s work had just evaporated in less than sixty minutes.

Before he could speak another word, the screen cut to black as federal tactical units swarmed the tarmac on his end, their muffled shouts echoing through the audio feed before the connection dropped entirely.
Silence settled over the room once more.
