Chapter 21 - The Unseen Heir

The flames of Arthur Sterling’s cliffside mansion had turned to cold ash by the time the maritime authorities finished their sweeps, but the shockwaves of his demise were only just beginning to ripple through the upper echelons of the global syndicates. With Sterling eliminated, the shadowy Zurich board fractured completely, leaving a vacuum of power that every ambitious underboss in Europe and North America was eager to fill. Yet, none of them dared make a move against the Moretti estate. They had learned the hard way what happened when you disturbed a sleeping apex predator.
In my private study, the air smelled faintly of old parchment and expensive leather. I sat at my mahogany desk, staring at the heavy brass key Arthur had thrown to me before his final breath. Beside it lay a thick iron lockbox retrieved from the vault beneath his burnt-out ruins.
"Boss," Bruno said, stepping into the room with quiet efficiency, his footsteps barely making a sound on the Persian rug. "The decryption team finished processing the hardware we recovered from Sterling’s vault. You’re going to want to see this."
He slid a high-resolution tablet across the polished wood. The screen displayed a digital blueprint of an underground facility located deep within the Swiss Alps—a facility registered under a dormant corporate shell owned by my father, Vincent Moretti.
"It’s not just a bank vault," I muttered, leaning closer as my eyes scanned the architectural notes. "It’s a containment facility."
"More than that," Bruno replied, his voice dropping an octave. "According to the financial logs, this facility was funded continuously for twenty years after your father’s supposed death. And the primary beneficiary listed on the security clearance roster isn't the Zurich board, nor is it Arthur Sterling."

I looked up at him, a cold realization forming in my chest. "Who?"
"Your father," Bruno said quietly. "He never left Europe, Adrien. He’s been operating inside the Alps facility all along, watching every move we made, waiting to see if you would survive the crucible."
