Chapter 8 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The sun was just beginning to peek over the eastern horizon, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and gold. The federal raid had come and gone like a violent summer thunderstorm, leaving behind sealed warrants, seized assets, and a mountain of bureaucratic paperwork that my legal team would spend weeks shredding or weaponizing.

Julian Vance was already in federal custody, singing like a canary in exchange for a witness protection deal that wouldn't save him from the wrath of surviving syndicate loyalists. Marcus was in surgery under heavy armed guard at a secure medical facility downtown.

And upstairs, the nursery was finally quiet again—not with the suffocating, artificial silence of frequency torture, but with the peaceful, heavy breathing of three deeply sleeping children.

I walked softly across the nursery floor, pausing by the three cribs. Theo, Miles, and Nora were curled up under their weighted blankets, their little faces relaxed, free from pain for the first time in days.

Sitting on the rocking chair in the corner was Elena, half-asleep with her head resting against the armrest. On the floor beside her, fast asleep with her thumb in her mouth and her arms wrapped tightly around the battered cloth doll, was Sophie.

I pulled a warm cashmere blanket from the back of the sofa and gently draped it over the little girl's shoulders. She stirred slightly, murmuring something unintelligible, before burying her face deeper into the worn fabric of the doll.

"Boss," Bruno whispered from the doorway, stepping into the room with quiet reverence. "The perimeter is secure. Permanent guard rotation established. Nobody gets within a mile of this estate without our biometric sign-off."

"Good," I murmured, never taking my eyes off Sophie. "And make sure Elena and her daughter are set for life. Trust funds, security detail, housing in the Swiss Alps if they ever want to leave this country. They earned it ten times over."

Bruno nodded respectfully. "Consider it done."
