Chapter 19 - Ashes and Empires

I looked down at the heavy brass key resting against my boot, then back up at Arthur.

For a fraction of a second, the temptation hung in the air like smoke. All the answers. The complete ledger. The ultimate power to crush every remaining rival syndicate across the globe in a single stroke.

Then I thought of Theo, Miles, and Nora screaming in their cribs. I thought of Sophie holding that battered cloth doll, her small fingers bravely dismantling a weapon designed to torture children. I thought of my father hiding in the shadows, treating his own bloodline like pieces on a chessboard.

I raised my Beretta.

Arthur’s smug smile vanished, replaced by sudden, raw terror. "Wait—what about the ledger?!"

"I don't need my father's ledger to rule my empire," I said coldly. "I built my own."

Bang.

The single gunshot echoed through the grand foyer, sharp and final. Arthur Sterling slumped backward against the elevator wall, sliding down into a dark crimson puddle on the floor.

The elevator doors began to close automatically. I reached down, snatched the brass key from the floor, and turned my back on the body.

Outside, Bruno and the tactical team had finally blown through the reinforced glass doors with a breaching charge, rushing into the foyer with their weapons raised.

"Boss! Are you hit?" Bruno shouted, scanning the room.

"I'm fine," I said, holstering my weapon and pulling out my encrypted satellite phone. "Call the cleanup crew. Burn this entire estate to the ground. Leave nothing behind."

"And the vault?" Bruno asked.

"Blow it open," I replied without hesitation. "Retrieve whatever documents are inside, and incinerate the rest. The past stays in the past."

As we walked out into the cool night air, the first tongues of fire began to lick through the glass windows of Arthur’s cliffside fortress, illuminating the dark Pacific waves in a brilliant, fiery orange glow. The empire was purged. The rot was gone.
