To keep them alive, Enzo knew he had to perform the hardest extraction of his life: he had to cut them loose, at least in plain sight. On a bleak, overcast Tuesday, he stepped through the glass door of the shop, the familiar chime ringing out like a melancholy bell. He bought his usual white rose, walking slowly over to the counter where Elena stood, her eyes reflecting quiet concern.

"I can't come back," Enzo told her, his voice uncharacteristically rough, the words tasting like ash and iron on his tongue. "Not like this. My presence is an invitation for wolves."

Elena stared at him, the color draining from her face, understanding the cruel geometry of his world instantly. From behind the stockroom door, little Mia emerged, holding a drawing, and ran up to grab the hem of his coat. "Are you leaving, Mr. Enzo?" she asked, her big eyes swimming with unshed tears.

Enzo felt his chest tear open. He forced himself not to kneel, gently untangling her small fingers from his wool coat. He looked deep into Elena’s eyes, transmitting a silent vow sealed in absolute agony, before turning his back, walking out into the heavy downpour, and driving away without looking in the rearview mirror.
